Overall
Two ski resorts, one hell of a place to ski. Hakuba 47 and Goryu are two resorts sharing the one mountain, making it the second largest ski area in Hakuba Valley behind Happo One. They’re connected at the top and their shared lift pass makes it easy to access runs on both sides. Even though it’s technically the same mountain, both resorts exhibit its own persona - Goryu is more beginner friendly at the base but if you’re willing to work for your powder, access the back ridge for breathtaking views and untouched white fluff. Hakuba 47 on the other hand, provides plenty for intermediate and advanced skiers with dedicated off-piste tree zone and the largest terrain park in Hakuba Valley for that extra thrill.

The ski season at Hakuba 47 and Goryu is a little longer than at other resorts in Hakuba Valley. For both resorts, the season begins in December - as a matter of fact, the lifts to the top section of the mountain can be the first to open in Hakuba Valley. The first few weeks of December can be a bit hit or miss, but by January winter is in full swing. The most powder days fall between January and February, which is peak season, and you’re going to see that in rising accommodation prices! During March you’ll enjoy plenty more bluebird days, but it’s a coin toss as to whether you’ll have fresh powder or more slush on the slopes. The tail end of the season in April brings with it spring conditions, with some white stuff left on the slopes but little in the way of fresh snow. If you’re looking to avoid the crowds then steer clear of Christmas, New Years and Chinese New Year (which usually falls between late January and mid-February and lasts about a week).

For beginners
Goryu has it all for beginners! For the little ones there's a kids-only beginner run and a Kid's Wonderland area. For the not-so little ones, there's plenty of mellow terrain including our favorite, the Merry Land Course! Hakuba 47 is less beginner-friendly with only a couple of runs available. Route 6 and Route 7 are probably your best bet, they're great runs but may be a bit too much for new beginners.

Hakuba 47 does have something for intermediates but Goryu is really where it's all at! Start off on the Sky Four Course for some big turns and carving before testing your limits on the ever so steep Super Course!

In addition to the incredible backcountry on offer, advanced and experts will also love the on-piste terrain here. Our top picks include Route 1 in Hakuba 47; a long, straight and fast run, so fast in fact, it's used for downhill races! In Goryu, the Grand Prix Course has just the right steepness and enough space to make wide turns. Dive into the off-piste trees along this course where the waist deep powder is a real treat!
More experts tipsFind freshies
Head over the back ridge at Goryu or weave through the trees at Hakuba 47 for plenty of powder stashes. The resort is north facing so the snow stays fresh for days!
Ditch the crowds
Intermediate skiers can escape the crowds in the Iimori area while advanced skiers can check out the well-spaced out Grand Prix Course. During weekends, Hakuba 47 sees fewer local crowds.
Non skiers
There are plenty of activities for non-skiers to enjoy around the resort from the onsens (hot springs) and snowmobile tours to day trips to the nearby Matsumoto Castle and Jigokudani Monkey Park.
Families
There are plenty of activites for all the family, including the kids-only run and Kid's Wonderland area on the Goryu side. Childcare services are also widely available around the resort for when you just want to shred the mountains yourself!

Hakuba 47 is a smaller sized ski resort. But, when combined with Goryu, it is average sized. Because the slopes primarily face north, Hakuba 47 has great wether conditions for a majority of the time.... Moreintermediate snowboarder

I found all the runs to be incredible especially for adventurous people! The runs suited all skill levels (beginner +) and The terrain park was great! The powder was amazing everywhere and it's somthong I'll never forget! All the people working in the hire stores and in the food stores were so lovely and the food was great!! Would come back in a... Undoubtedly this is the worlds best Skii resort!!! In my little knowledge of snow sports and what it involves, I can say that there's no place like Hakuba 47 & Goryu.
I've done snowboarding in the U.S (Heavenly Valley, Lake Tahoe; Vail, Colorado) but the quality wasnt as good as in the gorgeous land of Japan.

I rode hakuba 47 for 3 months nearly everyday in the 15/16 season, which was one of the worst seasons in 100 years, and boy oh boy goryu 47 still blew my mind.
