Learn more about Sugar Mountain Resort

Pros
  • Relatively good terrain variety
  • Best resort in North Carolina for advanced skiers
  • 1,200 ft vertical makes it comparable to medium sized western resorts
Cons
  • Lack of natural snow and variable conditions

Overall

4

Although quite small in size, Sugar Mountain is one of the two largest resorts in the region. Located in Banner Elk, North Carolina near Beech Mountain, Sugar Mountain has longer and more difficult runs of the two. Crowds can be an issue here as there is only a slow double chairlift to take skiers to the top. Off-mountain, the resort doesn't have the best après ski so head to nearby Boone instead.

Surprisingly big mountain for North Carolina. Snow is as good as could be hoped for, and really impressive vertical. Lifts are modern and well-run, and lodge facilities are great. Best snow in the South.... More

Sugar I definitely the best overall NC resort. Most terrain to be covered in NC and the most elevation change. Terrain park is never open, although there are some good looking features hidden in the trees. The webcams and website make it easy to see what will be open before you make the drive.... More

WORST experience for families who would like to enjoy the ski experience! They sale a lie. Zero organization and consideration for families, people. Two hours waiting line! Sugar Mountain Resort (Ski area) do not care about people’s safety and time. They just sale and sale, without limits! Took us (4 adults and 3 kids: 5, 6 and 9 years old) 2 HOURS... More

For North Carolina, this place is awesome. Easy to get to from Charlotte or points south, it's a real mountain without having to get on a plane. The lifts and facilities are top notch, and honestly the terrain is pretty good too. The acreage is obviously limited, what with this being in North Carolina they can only make so much snow. But for what... More

Sugar Mountain Resort is a nice resort to learn to ski at. Although it is not the best for more advanced skiers. Also the snow isn't good at all unless you come while it's snowing. Can also be very icy at times. ... More

Limited snow since this is in the south but one of the best along with Beech Mountain which is better in my opinion since it is higher elevation. Beech Mt is not on your list... More

One of the better resorts in NC. My top choice in the state. Speed lift now makes it a lot better than before. Terrain park is rarely open though. Like the option of 2 blacks and an easy blue at the top of the mountain.

The only resort that I have been to here on the east coast. Lots of fun to ride. I really enjoy the terrain here. I hope this next season is epic. I have been to west coast ski resorts and moved to the east. Still exploring resorts here.
